How To Setup Window XP File Sharing Under SP-1 Edition

Important Note Before Setting Up Window XP File Sharing:

If you're going to be running a Internet connection firewall, that is a computer level firewall and you want to do Windows XP file sharing at the same time, or any other sharing services like remote desktop control, you will need to open up those ports, you have to open some holes in your computer level firewall.

And this is pretty common for people who have set up the firewall in their computer and set up Window XP file sharing then suddenly the Window XP file sharing doesn’t seem to work. So let me explain how that works, go to control panel, then network connections.

Now I want to do Window XP file sharing with certain files from my PC over the LAN (local area network) and I have that connection firewalled. So if I share the files they are not going to be able to get through the firewall.

So what needs to done is first of all, right click on the icon, choose properties, I could go to the advanced tab and simply turn off the firewall and enable Windows XP file sharing that way by simply taking the check mark off the sections that says “Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet” then click ok..

But when you do, you will get a warning that says “Turning off Internet Connection Firewall could expose your computer to unauthorized access over the Internet. Are you sure you want to turn it off”? In other words, hey are you sure you want to exposure computer to the Internet attacks? Well actually, no, so click no when it ask if you are actually following along in this exercise.

So let’s repeat that again, right click on your LAN (local area connection), choose properties, then choose the advanced tap again and this time go down to the bottom and choose the settings button.

Now in advance settings you can turn on certain services that will be allowed on your computer and one of them might be remote desktop. I want this computer to be available for remote desktop and you can see here is the port number for it, 3389 and once again the internal port is 3389 and it is a TCP port.

So I can click OK and now remote desktop is turned on and people can access remote desktop if they are authenticated users of my computer.

But if you wanted Window XP file sharing and file sharing wasn't on this list, under Windows XP, SP1 or earlier. you have to add it manually if you want to have an internet connection firewall but you also want file sharing. So click the add button and you will get the service settings window.

And so here's the service, so we name the description as file sharing, then we name this computer the way it will appear on the network for example PC1 and there is the port number information too. So in this case in order to enable Window XP file sharing, you will need to click TCP and type port, 139 and 139 then click Ok

But you have to do this four different time so here are the other three items you have to enter in order to enable Window XP file sharing. Next click add again, name it again file sharing only this time I type port 445 which gives gives me printer sharing.

Then add another one. Only this time the type is UDP this time and type 137 for the port numbers. Now do it one last; called it file sharing again, then type 138 and click UDP.

Now I have these four options on and if you double-click, you can see which ones are there. So the ports that you actually need are 139-TCP, 445-TCP, 137-UDP and 138-UDP. Once you have done that you can hit ok and ok again.

Now I still have a firewall protecting this computer but now if I go to another computer on the network and I look for my shared documents, it will appear in my available network folders and people will be able to use those services. As well as something like a shared printer.

Now if you're under Windows XP SP2, this is actually a lot easier!
