How To Set Up Your Linksys Routers

How to connect multiple computers to your cable modem for internet connectivity using a linksys routers

In many instances, people will have more than one computer in their house and they will more than likely want to connect up to the internet on all of them. With the purchase of a linksys routers, you can accomplish this fairly easily. You will need to have Ethernet cables that are in each room that can be connected to the Router.

Typically you will have Ethernet Cable run in the walls like your phone line. If you are unable to run Ethernet cables throughout the house, and you prefer not to have cables running along the baseboards, you will need to use a Wireless router along with Wireless network interface cards on all of your computers.

In this instance, we will assume that you have your Cable Modem in a centralized location where it can be plugged into your new Linksys Routers. Before you connect the Router to the Cable modem, hook up the Cable modem directly to the network card on your desktop or laptop in your home network to insure you have Internet connectivity.

Once you have accomplished this, you can then connect the Cable modem to the Router. We'll assume you are using a Linksys Routers for this example. If you are using a different brand name, locate it on our routers page and follows those instructions.

1.      Before continuing please verify that your Cable modem is connected to the WAN Port of the router, and the first computer you will be setting up is connected to one of the number ports on the router (For example, port 2).

2.      Go to your desktop and double click on Internet Explorer (Located on the Start Menu in Windows XP).

3.      When "Internet Explorer" opens, type http://192.168.1.1 into the "Address" bar and click on Go or [Enter].

4.      The "Enter Network Password" window will appear.

5.      Skip the user name and type admin (admin is the default password) as the password, and click OK.

6.      Under  “WAN Connection Type” the default option for Obtain an IP automatically should be set.  If it is not, please set it to such, and click Apply. It should like the picture below:
