Home Network File
Sharing
If you're home network file sharing under Windows XP SP-2
and you are doing file sharing over your network, one thing
you need to be aware of is that there is a new control panel
in Windows XP SP-2. So first go to start button, control panel
and located the new icon called “Windows Firewall” this is
where you will have start in order to enable home network
file sharing so go ahead and double click it.

Now, by default when you install Windows XP SP2 Windows firewall
is on and this new icon is replacing the old firewall. Now
everything is collected in one place.
When it's on, which is fine for each individual computer,
you have to make sure that the exceptions are check under
the exceptions tab to enable home network file sharing. You
see files and printer sharing and it is checked by default.
Then there other programs that can
run and have exceptions in Windows firewall. If you want remote
desktop running, you have to make sure that remote desktop
is checked. If it doesn't even appear on the list, you can
add a particular service by clicking add program and choosing
the program that you want and add it.
There is even an
advanced tab that lets you set up different settings for the
different wireless and wired connectors that you have in your
home network. So you can have people able to do file and printer
sharing for example over your LAN (local area network), but
not allow it through the computer's wireless connection.
One other thing
I want to point out is the check box that says “Don't allow
exceptions”. This is great if you're working on a laptop that
you use on your network and then you go traveling with it
to say a hotel or a wireless hotspot, you can just check that
box to enable it and then hit Ok and now all the home network
file sharing and other services on your computer have just
been shut down. All of the home network file sharing that
you have set up, exceptions to your firewall are now blocked
and you can easily in one click turn it back on by a checkbox.

The main thing to member is that
if you are doing home network file sharing, is to make sure
that file and printer sharing are allowed and any other service
you want enabled has a check mark in it. That goes for any
other programs that require special ports to be opened, you
can do that here as well.
But again remember
these are ports on your computer not the firewall on your
router hardware. For more information about ports and opening
or closing ports on a router check out the content located
under the computer routers button in my navigation bar.
