Computer
network routers needs can range dramatically so if you need
other fast down-to-earth home networking instructions
than those covered by this page, not to worry, we have a lot
more help for you. Just start navigating from the http://www.best-home-networking-solutions.com
home page and locate your topic from the menu and follow the
links from there. I am very interesting in helping you get
your home networking setup so if for some reason you don't
find what you are looking for please me with your question
from our contact page.
Now if you are
having trouble with your computer network router and it's
not performing the way you expect, one thing you can check
is that it has the latest firmware.
Now a word
of caution here: If you update the firmware on your
computer network router, you'll have the potential of actually
damaging the router, so there are s a couple things to keep
in mind with a firmware update. Unless of course what you
want all along was an expensive paper weight or knick knack
for you computer desk.
- Number one,
never update firmware using a wireless connection only.
In other words, make sure you are plugged into the computer
network router directly via a wired network.
- Number two,
never do it before you desperately need your router for
some major event or Internet connection or critical email
because it may go off-line if something goes wrong.
- Number three,
whenever you update firmware in any computer device, do
not actually pickup moved bump or even sneeze too hard on
the device. In fact chase all pets and children out of the
room so they don't bump it either.
Computer
network router firmware is actually the software
that runs the router, but instead of it being software you
install on your computer, it is installed directly to the
computer network router and saved on chips inside the router.
Because of that, when the firmware is being rewritten, the
router is vulnerable and if an error occurs during
the rewrite you may have problem that render the router useless
and you might as well get a doily for it and place it on your
desk with all the other knick knacks. It may be that you can’t
even recover the old firmware once that has happened.
All that
is to say this, this is something you are only going
to do only if you have a problem with your computer network
router. Now I am not saying your should be afraid of updating
your firmware, but I like to apply the principal "if it ain't
broke, don't fix it". On the other hand, if you need it, use
it and just use this caution when you apply your computer
network router firmware update.
If you want to
see which firmware version you are currently using, just log
into the computer network router 's home page by typing into
your web browser the default address which should be "http://192.168.0.1"
(type in just what's between the quotes). That should bring
up your router's log in page.

Now on the upper
right corner of my Linksys router page we can see our firmware
version is version 2.02.2 and of course this may be located
on a different area of you routers page, but just look around
it shouldn't be too hard to find.

Now open another
browser to and navigate to your computer networking
router 's companies home page, in my example, we
will go to the www.linksys.com web site. Now I am not promoting
a Linksys router over anybody else's, I also show you how
to do with Netgear
, D-Link and Airport and others they are all great routers.
But you just happen to be on a linksys router tutorial.

Once at the web site. Find
their support tab, then click on customer support,
again every web page is different but what you are looking
for is something that says the firmware and they are usually
joined with drivers and other such things.

So after clicking on the products
page which is where they list their firmware (circled in red),
I am now prompted to make a selection of the operating systems
and hardware I am using. and I want firmware. Here's the Windows
XP operating system, but make sure you choose your own operating
system. Then I locate my version router which should be found
by looking at the bottom of the router if you don't
know what it is
.

So you are now at the computer
networking router 's product page and it shows you
what is available to you. Click on firmware and then the latest
firmware version is listed . In fact there is an upgrade for
the firmware. Again, you would only be doing this if you are
having problems and you can see here that they are telling
you that at the very least I need to have version 2.02.2 which
I do have.

Linksys give you the option of having
an auto upgrade utility take care of the update but I will
recommend downloading the file to your desktop. Before you
close the Linksys web site, I want you to see that sometimes
they tell you what has changed in the firmware updates which
can be very helpful in your decision to upgrade.
For example maybe
they made a change for wireless network connections and that
happens to be the problem you are having then it is a good
chance that the computer networking router firmware update
will take care of the problem.

So let’s suppose that you will updated it now.
Go ahead and close the companies web site then return to your
router's page and click on the administration page/panel on
the Linksys page. Click the link that says "firmware upgrade"
and you will see whole bunch of warnings, don't turn off power,
or it's not be interrupted, etc…

Click the browse button
and navigate to the file you just downloaded to the desktop.
Make sure you have unzipped it before getting to this point.
Now move down to
the up grade button at the bottom of the page. WARNING!
Again, whatever you do, when you click on upgrade,
you have to make sure nothing bumps your computer
network router while it is upgrading. Actually it
only take a couple of minutes and you will see the screen
telling your "upgrade was successful". But it is important
to make the point to be careful.

So let’s go ahead and click continue
and allow the router to restart and reconnect and then you
will be returned to the admin screen again.
Computer network router is updated
and hey look, there is something is different, remember firmware
upgrade was the last link on the right side before update
your computer network router firmware , now I got this new
tab that has appeared called “configuration management” and
that seems to give me the ability to backup the configuration
of the router. So that was something added by the firmware
upgrade.
That is
it! By looking in the upper right hand corner of
the computer network router admin page you can now see the
new firmware version is installed. Good Job!
